South Milwaukee is located about fifteen minutes south of the City of Milwaukee on the shores of Lake Michigan. It is about fifteen minutes north of the thriving community of Racine, Wisconsin. South Milwaukee had its start in the year 1891 when a town site was purchased by developers for the purpose of establishing a suburb. It was incorporated as a village in 1892 and currently occupies about five square miles with a population exceeding 21,000 people. South Milwaukee is the headquarters of Bucyrus International, formerly Bucyrus-Erie, which is known for constructing large shovels and dragline excavators, including Big Muskie, the world's largest mobile earth-moving machine. It is a source of local pride that Bucyrus shovels were used in the construction of the Panama Canal. In November of 2012, Caterpillar Mining bought Bucyrus International for 8.6 Billion dollars with the goal of becoming a one-stop shop for mining companies worldwide.
